Along with teaching our children to pray as Jews, it is the responsibility of our religious school to teach our children to act as Jews. A major focus of this school year is the mitzvah of Tzedakah. We are hoping that they will gain sensitivity to the needs of the less fortunate and express it through the giving of Tzedakah and G'miloot Chasadim, doing acts of kindness.
With this in mind, each class has adopted a charity. The classes are also engaging in a friendly competition to see which can raise the most money for their organization. The following list shows which organization each class is supporting: PreGan and Gan - The Little Shelter Gimmel - Chai Lifeline Aleph - World Wildlife Fund Daled - Rainforest Fund Bet - Toys For Tots Hay - Mazon
The students are not just bringing in money, they are learning about their chosen organization. Each charity has different needs - in addition to funding of course - and we are learning about them and also about what kinds of things their organization does to help others. Just like the many adults in our synagogue taking part in Tikkun Olam, our students are also learning about their responsibility as Jews to help repair the world. |
